Education

Introduction to GraceWorks
GraceWorks, established by Grace Cathedral in partnership with secular
resources, wishes to provide job search and career transition support for
unemployed and underemployed professionals of the San Francisco Bay Area.
An attempt is made to provide spiritual, technical, and operational resources.
The mission of GraceWorks is three-fold:
- To provide a spiritual framework for career transitions.
- To develop a caring, supportive, and nurturing community.
- To host a safe place for open and non-judgmental discussion and
sharing of feelings and resources.

Karen Walter - How the Recovery Act Has
Affected Your Work Opportunities
|
Date: |
Monday June 29, 2009 |
|
Time: |
8:30 am - 11:00 am |
|
Location: |
Grace Cathedral - Gresham Hall -
It is located on the ground floor to
the immediate right of the Gift
Shop. One can enter through the
Peet's Coffee entrance on California
Street. |
Karen Walter, a Employment
Program Representative for the
Employment Development Department of
the State of California, will
clarify some issues regarding
unemployment insurance for us, as
well as cover how the Recovery Act
has affected UI, UI extensions,
COBRA, WIA Training and work
opportunities in general. She will
also talk about the expansion of TAA
(very important!) and EDD hiring.
She will be emphasizing what she
sees as new opportunities opening up
with the stimulus package.
Karen has worked for the state
employment service in California
(now known as the Employment
Development Department) for
forty-one years and in that time she
has witnessed many changes.
Employment services funding began in
the New Deal along with many other
social services. The early 1960s saw
the beginning of the federal
manpower programs with the passage
of the Manpower Development and
Training Act (MDTA). Karen’s
employment began around that time
and during the “War on Poverty”.
MDTA later morphed into the
Comprehensive Employment and
Training Act (CETA), then the Job
Training Partnership Act (JTPA) and
now the Workforce Investment Act (WIA)
passed in 1998. Karen’s experience
has taken her through four
recessions (five, if you consider
the current one separate from what
happened in 2000) so has something
important to teach us about
government assisted job searches in
a recession. Because of her lengthy
experience, she is a fabulous
resource person in many areas, so
join us to hear Karen share her
expertise with us.
